My wife and I recently returned from a 10 day visit to France. Of course, we went to Normandy, and in our visit to the American Cemetery overlooking Omaha Beach, and after wandering aimlessly through the cemetery for several minutes, I was completely dumfounded to find myself standing directly in front of the grave marker for a S. Sgt. James L. Cluff of the 358 Division of the 90th Infantry. His marker states he was killed on June 11, 1944 and that he was from California.

Since my mother was a Cluff, and due to the rarity of that name I am certain that we have to be related in some way. I did a genealogical search through the LDS Family History website and found no information on this person.

I am writing here in hopes that someone may have some information about him or can direct me to where I can find government documents that might have information about him.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Dale - I found Mr. Cluff as KIA with the 358/Co.B on June 11th (same day my father was wounded with 358/Co.D). He is also in the Company B picture taken at Ft. Dix, NJ. in March'44 taken prior to the 90th going overseas in late March'44.
Unfortunately, the Company B picture is one of those that is not included on this website.
To research Mr. Cluff, go to www.nara.gov and search the Honor Roll of Dead & Missing.....the roll lists all men KIA by state/county....you'll need to check each county to find his name....then try finding the name "Cluff" on www.switchboard.com....
Send a letter to request his Individual Deceased Personnel File (IDPF). An IDPF exists for all men/women that were KIA in WWII.
Cite the Freedom of Information Act in your request and include his name, rank, serial#, date of death, and unit...90th division, 358th Regiment/Company B.
It takes 12-16 weeks to receive the file. Please contact me directly at <nrichards2@juno.com> if you have questions.

Thanks Norm.

Sorry that I took so long to respond to this. I was never notified by email that a response to my post was posted. I was just doing some internet searches on my name this morning and saw this hit from over 4 years ago. I will try the items that you have suggested since I have only been able to find that he was from Los Angeles County and born in Utah. If you have any more suggestions please let me know...I will report to you what I will find after trying your great suggestions.

thanks again. DH
